On David Armano’s blog, I discovered his Profesionnal Prism of Trust.

Ironical and interesting. Personally I don’t trust neither doctors, nor bankers. Social Media is what I know the best in this diagram, so it’s less hard for me to understand the ins and the outs of this. We trust what we experience. I can imagine that if your company is sick, you won’t turn to a social media expert first, even if now it wouldn’t surprise me. Social media is a part of a global strategy, not a magic formula nor a scientifically proved theory. I can clearly understand why people can be reluctant or afraid of using this kind of tools.
- It’s hard to measure very precisely the results
- social media: conversation + speed= very quick spread. Your reputation can be undone in a snap
- when you hear all the social media experts, they advocate transparency. But how being completely transparent without making mistakes?
Etc.
By the way, you can find in an article of socialmediatoday.com 15 reasons why companies may fear social media.
Obviously, you can’t trust someone (the social media expert) who can’t assure you that he controls completly what is said on you/your image/ your reputation. We can only anticipate the worst (or the best) scenario, but not write it.
I wonder where garage owners would land on this picture ;-).
And yes, you need a well thought strategy for social media that’s connected to the overall marketing strategy which is suppose to support well defined business objectives. Jumping in social media without a clear understanding of what you want to achieve/can realistically achieve is a sure recipe for disillusion.
I was reading a post yesterday where someone was saying 2/3 of the marketers who say they know social media (aka are expert) don’t actually know what it is. Having a facebook/linkedin profile doesn’t make someone an expert ;-).
I do agree with you Laurent. I think that the term “social media expert” is quite “ridiculous”, even more “guru”. you forgot twitter! The more you have followers, the more you are an influent expert. Isn’t it?
